Where Do I Place My Focus After Launch Week Is Over?

After you finish officially launching your newsletter into the marketplace, now is the time to focus on these specific things…

  1. Goals - What do you want to accomplish?

  2. Metrics - What stats will be tracked and managed?

  3. Actions - What actions will you consistently take every week?

  4. Weekly Flow - When will you get the work done each week?

#1 Write Down Your Goals

What goals do you have for your newsletter business, and when do you plan on achieving them?

When you write your goals down, make sure that you:

  1. Clarity Of Goal - Determine the goal you will pursue (exactly)

  2. Deadline - Decide when each goal will be accomplished by (date)

Example Goal: I will grow my newsletter subscriber list to 10,000+ subscribers by or before the end of 2023

When you read that example goal, you will notice there is a clearly defined outcome, and a deadline by when you want to accomplish it by. Any goal that doesn’t have these two things is not a goal.

Now that this is clear, let’s move on to the next piece when it comes to writing down your goals.

The goals you write down for your newsletter business will most likely fall in one of two categories:

  1. Long-Term Goals - These are the goals that are 1-5 years out

  2. Short-Term Goals - These are goals that are 30/60/90 days out

When you write your goals down for your business, make sure that you have a place where you can easily see the difference between your short term and long term goals.

Suggestion: Take two blank pieces of paper right now, and staple them together. The first page can be the page for the “Long-Term” goals, and the second page can be for the “Short Term” goals. After you staple both pages together, then you have what you need to write down your short term and long term goals for your business. If you need to brainstorm your goals on a yellow pad before you write down the goals on the correct piece of paper…that is OK too.

After this document is created, make sure that you look at it every day to guide your focus and actions while building your business.

#2 Decide What Metrics Matter

After you get clear about the goals for your business, next it is time to figure out the key metrics you will be paying attention to on a daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly basis.

Every single one of the metrics that you choose to pay attention to on a consistent basis will help you manage your business effectively.

Example Metrics: Newsletter Subscribers, Website Traffic, Ad Revenue

After you get clear about the metrics you want to pay attention to, then you can create your very own dashboard in an excel spreadsheet to help you manage your business on a daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly basis.

Every metric you choose to include on your dashboard will more likely than not be tied directly to the goals that you are pursuing, so use your goals as a reference point to define what metrics will matter to you as you grow and build your business.

#3 Decide What Actions You Will Take - 90 Days At A Time

Now that you are clear on your goals for your business, and have clearly defined the specific metrics that you will be tracking on your business’s dashboard, now it is time to figure out what actions you need to take, so you can quickly make your goals a reality.

When it comes to taking action and executing on your business, we recommend that you focus on taking action “90 Days” at a time.

Here at The Pursuit Newsletter, we build our business by working inside of multiple “90 Day” periods of time.

We do things this way because we have found that it is easy to create an “action and execution” plan for the next 90 days after the previous 90 days are over.

After a “90 Day Period” is over, we as a team know…

  1. What WORKED

  2. What DID NOT WORK

  3. What NEEDS TO BE DONE the next 90 days

After reviewing the previous 90 day period, it allows us to create the plan for the next 90 days.

We keep doing more of what worked, and let go of what didn’t.

While doing more of what worked, we also figure out what else we need to include in our actions as a team for the next 90 days as well.

The actions you will take inside each “90 Day” period will fall into one of two categories:

  1. Category #1: “One-Time” Actions

  2. Category #2: “Consistent” Actions

Category #1: “One-Time” Actions - These are the specific actions that you will take inside of each “90 Day” period that have a “One-Time” start-and-stop “dynamic” to the specific action you are taking.

Example (One-Time Action Inside A 90 Day Period): Contact one PR person to write a press release about my newsletter, and work with the PR person to execute a PR exposure campaign in the media for my newsletter.

As you can see from the example above, “contacting” a PR person is a “one-time” action, and the campaign you run with the PR person will have a defined start and stop date.

Category #2: “Consistent” Actions - These are the specific actions that you will take inside of each “90 Day” period that are the continual actions that need to be done on a consistent basis, and that are directly tied to the goals that you have written down.

Example (Consistent Action Inside A 90 Day Period): Publish a brand new newsletter every Thursday at 9am EST.

As you can see from the example above, “publishing” a new newsletter consistently each week makes sense for you as a newsletter business owner. You will always be doing this activity inside of the 90 day period you are working inside of because it is directly tied to the achievement of your business’s goals.

Take Action Now: As you look at your short term and long term goals, what specific “one-time” and “consistent” actions do you believe you need to take in the next 90 days to help you get closer to the goals that you have written down? Write everything that comes to mind down on piece of paper (you will be using this in the next section).

Now that you are clear on the actions you will take inside of the next “90 Day” period of your business, now it is time to create a specific system to help you manage everything so nothing falls through the cracks.

#4 What Does Your “Weekly Flow” Of Action Look Like?

After you have defined the specific “one-time” and “continual” actions you need to take (that are in alignment with the goals you have for your business), then it is time for you to set up the specific systems to help you manage the activity you will execute on a daily and weekly basis for the next 90 days.

Set up these specific things that will help you manage each day:

  1. Staple Calendar - This will help you manage the “one-time” actions that need to be done inside of the next 90 days. When you start your day, this is the first thing you look at.

  2. Weekly Actions Overview - This will help you manage what needs to be done on a weekly basis for your “continual” tasks that need to be done at least once every seven days (tied directly to the goals). This page will be broken down by “day” so you know what needs to be done every day each week. When you start your day this is the second thing you look at before starting your work day.

  3. “Action For Today” Page - This is the page that you will create every day you begin working to keep track of what needs to be completed that day. After you look at your “calendar,” you put everything that needs to get done that day (located on your calendar). After you look at your “weekly actions overview” you will also put down what needs to be done that day based on what is on that document. You will also have specific things on this page that you are waiting on as well that were “generated” from previous things you worked on either that week, or in the previous week(s).

So at this point…

Take the list that you made in the previous section with all of the “one-time” and “continual” actions that you brainstormed (while looking at the list of goals you have), and insert them into the calendar and the “weekly actions overview” document that you will reference every single day.

You can manage all of this on a paper, or in a software program that you will use each time you sit down to work. The solution you choose to manage your execution system is entirely up to you!

Everyone has their own working style, so make this entire thing your own.

As you move on from your newsletter business’s launch day (and week), make sure that you continually focus on the “5 Core Activities” that every newsletter business owner must focus on at all times.

  1. Create New Newsletters - Create a consistent publishing schedule for your newsletter and stick to it

  2. Publish New Content - Create and publish specific website content that will continually add value to your subscriber base as they get your newsletter each week

  3. Grow Your Traffic - Do the things that need to be done to continually grow your website’s traffic every single month

  4. Grow Your Subscribers - Do the things that need to be done on a continual basis to continue growing your newsletter subscriber base

  5. Monetize Your Newsletter Business - Never take your eye off of this one as you continue to improve the newsletter subscriber and website metrics for your business.

As you look at your goals (and this specific list), make sure that the actions that you take on a daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly basis fall into one of these categories so that you can consistently make progress on the goals that you have written down.

There is no one size fits all answer to this question, but if anyone on our team was dealing with this situation with a client, this is how we would approach it.

  1. Review - Figure out what was done on the day you launched your newsletter, and all of the action that was taken between then and now

  2. Identify - Identify the specific things that worked and did not work well between launch day and right now

  3. Focus - Focus in on the goals you have, and decide what needs to be done going forward on a “one-time” and “continual” basis

  4. Plan - Figure out and plan how you will move forward from this moment to make your goals happen in the next 90 days

After you follow the steps in this list above, consider “re-launching” your newsletter again while still respecting what you have already done in the past.

There is a possibility that you didn’t do specific things on your launch day and/or launch week that make sense to do right now to push your newsletter business forward.

All of those decisions that need to be made, and what needs to be done will ultimately be up to you.
